BioI graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with a BFA in Art & Design: Studio & with minors in Women's Studies & in Psychology. I went on to get my MA in Art Therapy from New York University.
I am an art therapist at a state hospital in CA.
These are my artjournals, my paintings and drawings, my other creative projects, thoughts about art, works-in-progress, artists i admire, and personal art therapy.
One of my art journals is available in book form:
When a person tries to communicate an emotion in words, the usual outcome is a confabulationabout the origin of the feeling. The conscious mind cannot help but censor feelings when reducing them to words, and it cannot even retrieve emotional memories that were not verbally coded when they were originally stored. When one's nonverbal memories conflict with what one consciously remembers and that conflict is troubling, then it may be necessary to bypass the obligatory censorship and rescue the nonverbal message in its wordless form.
Because art records and permanently displays the artist's nonverbal message, it can protect the original emotional communication of the artist from obligatory censorship or disavowal by the artist's conscious mind. Emotional expression in any nonverbal art form recorded before the artist's automatic verbal censorship occurs, even if most of the content is a deliberate production of the verbal mind. The art captures the fleeting emotional message and preserves the opportunity for objective perception by the trained art therapist.
